After being overwhelmed with good feedback from their customers, Asus are now planning to embed a lightweight version of Linux dubbed ‘Splashtop’ into all of their motherboards.

DeviceVM, the company behind the distribution, announced on Wednesday that the hardware manufacturer would be putting Splashtop (which Asus calls “Express Gate”) into more than a million motherboards a month. Joe Hsieh, General Manager of Asus said,
“In response to great user feedback, our plan is to proliferate Express Gate across our entire motherboard-product portfolio, starting with over one million motherboards per month…….
“Consumers want to turn their PCs on and off like any other appliance, and Express Gate has made that possible.”
Splashtop/Express gate is an instant-on “secure web-surfing environment” which can be booted in seconds as an alternative to a full operating system. Applications incorporated into Splashtop include a Firefox-derived browser and the popular Skype internet telephone application.

Splashtop first appeared on high-end Asus motherboards in October last year and was later added to the more mainstream M3 motherboards series. Splashtop will now be extended through the entire range of Asus motherboards.
Four new motherboards carrying Splashtop/Express Gate will appear this quarter: the P5Q Deluxe, P5Q-WS, P5Q3 Deluxe and P5Q-E.
DeviceVM hopes to have “numerous Splashtop-enabled motherboards, desktops and laptops available internationally in 2008″, the company said.

Google Gphone Tipped To Compete Against Apple iPhone

Talks of a phone from Google dubbed the Gphone, have recently been causing a stir on the World Wide Web. There are articles mentioning deals between certain high profile companies with expected release dates and even articles from people claiming they have already seen prototypes. Whether or not we can believe everything we read, Google are on the up and up so a move into the wireless industry is not out of character.
There have been a few reports that Google are making a big push in the development of their own handset. High Tech Computers, a Taiwan-based smart phone maker are rumored to be designing the Linux device which is said to incorporate a Texas Instruments edge chipset. There have been a number of specifications listed in these reports and if all of this turns out to be true, Google may revolutionize the way we use our cell phones.
Reports suggest we can expect a handset that provides Wi-Fi, 3-G and GPS capability, a user friendly browser such as Linux or possibly one designed by Google, access to VoIP, Gtalk or even Skype, a 2 Megapixel Camera, Mp3, a predictive Qwerty Keyboard and of course, a large color screen.
The Gphone is apparently scheduled for release early 2008, with T-Mobile and Orange tipped to be providing services it may seem like everything is almost decided. If Google can come up with a handset that can incorporate all these features then they really will have a rival to the Apple iPhone.
The iPhone is a great device and certainly did take mobile technology to the next level; however some felt it did not quite live up to the hype. All this talk of the Gphone is setting the stage for something really spectacular but with no sign of any official concept designs, it is difficult to really predict what is on the companies mind.
Note: All images are Unofficial Concept Sketches; designs are artist impressions of what the Gphone may look like.

So much so that Microsoft set to the drawing board and immediately began developing a rival project.
Tip: Be sure to check out the link at the end of this article for a link to a listing of various free and open source software programs for download that is having the executives at Microsoft shaking in their boots and thinking about ways to counter this!
The aim is to offer a free version of Microsoft Works which will be pre installed in desktops and will display advertisements stored in cache, the advertisements that help support the application will be refreshed when the computer establishes an internet connection.

Well for openers we are not implying General Patton would advise you to buy a computer from 800HighTech. When he was planning battles they didn’t even have computers. BUT I am quite sure what he would advise to assure you make a wise decision on anything would be gather all the good intelligence available and verify that it is accurate. Then taking all the important factors into consideration and weighing the importance of each, make a decision and act on your decision! In battle as in life sometimes timing is everything.
Many great men in history when faced with a decision would take an ordinary piece of paper and draw a line top to bottom. On one side of the line they would write the reasons for a certain decision and on the other the reasons against. They would look at the pluses & minuses, weigh the facts, make a decision and then they would act! I suggest you do the same on this and when faced with any big decision. It may help you to crystallize your thinking, I know it helps me.

Many unsophisticated consumers believe an initial lower price means a given item is the least expensive BUT that is not always true. Sometimes the costs are hidden and you just keep paying them.
:: Considerations When Purchasing a Computer ::
Can the item you purchased be upgraded?
Many large manufacturers still sell computers with parts that are proprietary. If you can upgrade at all it must be through the OEM. Usually this means unusually high expense to upgrade or that you must buy another computer
How easily can 800HighTech upgrade?
We do upgrades on your purchased computers at cost and ad the charge to your account. If your account is 6 months old and you are current most often you will not be asked to increase your allotment. The items can either be shipped to you or we will install them for you at cost. What could be easier or less costly??
What about service and support?
As a member of the US military you either are now or very soon you could be overseas where many companies are unwilling and most are unable to provide you competent warranty repair and/or phone technical support. We have toll free numbers and will call you back wherever you are to diagnose and resolve problems. On warranty repairs we pay shipping both ways. What could be less costly than that?
Sometimes your wife is the one with the computer and she depends on you for tech support so who does she call when you are deployed. Sean & Casey make sure dependents get help to be up & running whenever you are away. If your computer goes down whatever the reason you want help now. Nobody does that better than 800HighTech. How much is that worth?
What about shipping problems?
If your computer is shipped to you via the USPS there is always the risk that your item could be lost or stolen. USPS has a cumbersome BUT reliable claim service if the shipper knows how it works. Often it takes six months though for a claim to be paid. Most companies refuse to ship your replacement until they have been reimbursed.
At 800HighTech we know the USPS system. If you sign the claim form we send a replacement on the 30th day. Lost or stolen does not happen often (unless you are in Korea) BUT if it happens to you having purchased from 800HighTech is a comfort.
What about the high finance charge?
Members of the US military enjoy great finance charges from AAFES using their Star Card etc for mass produced computers on base. BUT if they want a custom built system such as offered at 800HighTech most of those same credit unions won’t extend credit to our customers for computer loans. The better question is what would it cost for anyone to finance a computer off base? Again most of our customers would be turned down for credit off base. At Sears, Circuit City, Dell , Sony etc. BUT if they were to open an account most companies charge more than 800HighTech. Our finance charge for people with bad credit is better than your CO with perfect credit would pay at the aforementioned companies.
Plus we offer one year rebates on all finance charges if the purchase is paid within one year. People who say our finance charges are high just don’t know what is really available.
What if I void my warranty?
Most companies will void your warranty for ANY excuse. At 800HighTech that is hard to do unless you are impossibly rude & difficult. We want to keep your computer running at peak performance for as long as possible so that when you are ready to buy another you buy from us. We replace parts & refurbish older systems and provide fresh warranties when other companies refuse to help at all. Nobody will deny this unless they were rude and difficult.
What is the bottom line?
People who talk only about price also forget that some military customers don’t have cash or credit and still want and need a computer now. Having a reliable company who also arranges credit makes ownership of a quality system possible immediately.
In two or three weeks you will be enjoying the system you could only dream about while building or rebuilding your credit. Those who purchased the cheapest system for cash will not be having the same experience and if they encounter a problem will begin to see there are other factors to consider besides price.
We have done this for over 10 years living and working overseas with our customers. I have answered my phone from 0700 till 2300 accepting calls from customers. Sure we have critics BUT they are not customers. 99% of our customers are very well satisfied with us. The 1% is like the guy who having finished paying for his computer wrote his e-mail of complaint anonymously. I checked his file and he had never contacted us for support. It was as if he wanted to be wronged. If you have a complaint tell me and I will address it. Tell somebody else, which is common, and they will have to fix it because I won’t know.

Computer Memory for Custom Built Computers

Deciding on computer memory for most of us doesn’t mean much. For those who do understand, they know that selecting the right computer memory can mean a world of difference in performance of your computer. It’s been said that you can never have enough money, and the same holds true for RAM, especially if you do a lot of graphics-intensive work or gaming. Next to the CPU itself, RAM is the most important factor in computer performance. If you don’t have enough, adding RAM can make more of a difference than getting a new CPU!

RAM is the best known form of computer memory. RAM is considered “random access” because you can access any memory cell directly if you know the row and column that intersect at that cell. When you think about it, it’s amazing how many different types of electronic memory you encounter in daily life. Many of them have become an integral part of our vocabulary: RAM, ROM, Cache, Dynamic RAM, Static RAM, Flash memory, Memory Sticks, Virtual memory, Video memory, and BIOS.
If your system responds slowly or accesses the hard drive constantly, then you need to add more RAM. If you are running Windows XP, Microsoft recommends 128MB as the minimum RAM requirement. At 64MB, you may experience frequent application problems. For optimal performance with standard desktop applications, 256MB is recommended. If you are running Windows 95/98, you need a bare minimum of 32 MB, and your computer will work much better with 64 MB. Windows NT/2000 needs at least 64 MB, and it will take everything you can throw at it, so you’ll probably want 128 MB or more.
We will discuss the benefits of memory and how to decide how much memory your custom computer or custom laptop should have. You can always upgrade later, but it is best to get the right memory first.
