Touch Screen interfaces are paving way for the new generation of display units. Already featured in many devices such as ATMs, phones and PDAs, the simplicity of touch screen is user-friendly and extremely appealing to most.

A demo at the recent 2008 CeBIT Expo, shows what the future of multi-touch touch-screen displays will look like. The display closely resembles the touch screen display used by Tom Cruise in the popular film Minority Report.

Although it may not be the first attempt at this kind of multi-touch, the demo of a fully working unit on display to the public is certainly a first.CeBIT (Centrum der Büro- und Informationstechnik; German for “Centre of Office and Information technology”) was traditionally the computing part of the Hanover Fair, a big industry trade show held every year in Germany.

In the 1986s the IT and telecommunications section was straining the resources of the industry fair so much that it was given a separate trade show held four weeks earlier than the main Hanover Fair. CeBIT expo’s have since become world renowned and are also held in Shanghai, Sydney and Istanbul.

Another Multi-Touch Display causing a stir has been incorporated into the surface of bar. iBar as the display is know, gives your bar a crazy multi-touch effect which will either provide you with hours of visual entertainment, or make you dizzy after one too many….

Eizo FlexScan SX2461W-U Monitor

In Japan alone, there are more than 5 million people in total who see color differently from ordinary people, due to their genetic types or eye diseases. These days almost all images and texts are displayed in color, everything from newspapers to advertising billboards and ATM’s to Televisions would look rather unprofessional if they were not, bad news for people who are color blind.

However the development of a new technology called new Color Universal Design (CUD) is sure to help those who suffer from being able to distinguish colors properly.

Color Deficiency Diagram

The diagram above shows how people who are color blind may perceive an image. Eizo has incorporated this technology into a new 24”LCD aimed at people who are color blind. The FlexScan SX2461W-U monitor sports the new CUD technology that utilizes different color schemes, shapes and patterns in the colors to help people distinguish different colors where they otherwise would be unable.

The FlexScan monitor priced Â¥136,000 or approx $1,235 USD and supports full HD (1920×1200), with a contrast ratio of 850:1, and a brightness of 300cd/m2.

Choosing The Right Type Of Monitor Display

Whether you’re buying a new monitor or replacing the display on your existing machine, there are a few points to consider. Technology has progressed quite a lot in the recent years giving users a lot more options when it comes to monitors. First it’s important to know if you require a CRT monitor, an LCD or a new HDTV.

Plasma Screen Display Monitor

CRT - Cathode Ray Tube Monitors

CRT MonitorsCRT or Cathode Ray Tube Monitors are big and bulky and have been used in conjunction with PCs for many years. They are relatively cheap compared to newer LCD and HDTV monitors, and are compatible with all PCs. Resolution is high quality and can be changed to suit screen size or the users preferences, but as the signal is analog, CRT monitor will not have a DVI port and therefore will not directly support High Definition. If you have an up-to-date graphics card graphics card you may be able to connect your HD cable, satellite box top or HD-DVD to your computer however you will loose quality as the HD signal is converted into analog to be displayed on the CRT.

LCD - Liquid Crystal Displays

LCD MonitorLCD or Liquid Crystal Displays were first produced in the US back in 1972; however it took quite a few years before LCD monitors were available on the consumer market. Over the last 10 years Flat Screen LCD monitors have become increasing popular as they save space and have better options for newer digital connections like HDTV, plus they usually have more audio option for home theater style set-ups. LCD monitors can produce crisper images than CRT monitors but they can only do so in their native resolution. Attempting to run LCD panels at non-native resolutions can result blurriness and multiple kinds of HDTV Blur. In general LCD monitors can not truly display as many colors as a CRT. LCD’s can also cause migraines and eyestrain problems due to flicker from fluorescent backlights fed at 50 or 60 Hz however this quite rare.

Plasma Screen Monitors

Plasma Display ScreenPlasma Screen Monitors are commonly used for large TV displays. Plasma Displays were introduced around the same time as LCD monitor but due to the nature of the components; they are the most expensive type of display monitors. They produce a much crisper image at a higher resolution than LCD monitors. They also support a wide array of video and audio connections for digital or analog use. The superior brightness, faster response time, greater color spectrum, and wider viewing angle of a plasma monitor makes them one of the most popular forms of display for HDTV, however recent improvements in LCD technology have narrowed the technological gap.

We have started adding some pretty amazing big LCD and Plasma screens to our stock. To View 800Hightech’s Range of Monitors Available on Finance For Military Service Members, Please Click Here>>>

Specifications to consider when choosing between the different types of monitors:

Resolution: This is the amount of pixels that can be displayed horizontally x vertically. A higher resolution means bigger and better quality graphics. Standard and most easily viewed CRT resolutions are usually:

  • 15″-800 x 600 / 1,024 x 76817″
  • 17″-1,280 x 1,024
  • 19″-1,280 x 1024
  • 21″-1,600 x 1,200

Plasma technology enables bigger screens and higher resolutions in excess of 1920 x 1080. LCD screens also come in large sizes but will have a native resolution for optimal viewing.

Refresh rate: The refresh rate is the measurement of the number of times per second the screen is redrawn. This measurement is measured in hertz, the faster the refresh rate the better quality the picture.

Dot Pitch: This measurement is found on most monitors. It defines the amount of space (in millimeters) that separates two adjacent pixels that are the same color, the smaller the Dot Pitch, the sharper the image.

HDTV Compatible: If you’re looking for a monitor to incorporate your full home theater then HDTV compatibility is certainly something you should look for.

BumpTop Enhanced Desktop Interface

The digital age is here and has been for some time now. The computer interface we have come to know has become boring and in my opinion out-dated. It no longer gives a sense of high tech or advanced. It is a 2-D mundane layout that has me missing the days of old when my desk was in a chaotic and cryptic mess that only I understood. Well, programmers feel the same and they are taking this boring interface to the next level!

This is a great idea and a fun interface. Some problems with it however is you do not see the file names that distinguish file types from one another and you are not able to see a thumbnail preview of a picture or document like in new Windows environment. I am sure these bugs can be worked out and the program will be much better once it gets to the serious stage.

If you remember the Photosync Technology and Microsoft Surface environment, this interface is quickly adapting and evolving. I am ready for the change now - hopefully it becomes mainstream soon.

Semi Transparent LCD Screens

Semi Transparent LCD Screen

Active Inc., a Tokyo-based optical component manufacturer, is working on a transparent liquid crystal optical film as a replacement for backlit LCDs. A see-through composite LCDdisplay works just like traditional liquid crystal displays which are transparent until you run a current through them, at which point all the crystals in the liquid align and become opaque. I guess the difference here is that the screen is backlit by ambient light, which is a neat idea with questionable consumer practicality, but its stain-glass effect is impressive. Transparent TVs have always been a vision portrayed in the best scifi and futuristic movies such as Minority Report.
