Since the release of the famed Eee PC there has been ample time for enthusiasts to dig deeper inside the machine and as a result, there are a number of useful hacks emerging.
We picked out three of the best hacks that can transform your Eee PC into a top-of-the range-Laptop.
Install Ubuntu
If you’re a Linux user at heart, there is probably going to be time when you want to try out Ubuntu’s familiar desktop.
To do this you will need to download Ubuntu Eee, a community driven derivative of Ubuntu which is specifically designed for Eee Laptops; you must also configure the Eee PC to boot from flash media.
This is probably the hardest part of the process; first you will need a small application which burns ISO images to flash drives. A popular program for doing this is called UNetbootin which is available along with the latest version of Ubuntu Eee installation from the Ubuntu website.
Then you must format the Eee Pc’s SD card using a machine running Ubuntu. This is where it gets a little tricky; you can use the dd command to fix the SD card’s MBR.
- dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=[type the correct device path within these brackets]
Next you must erase the existing partitions on the SD card and create a new one that is formatted with FAT32 and set with the bootable flag. A tool called gparted can you help you complete this.
Now all that is left to do is burn the ISO image to the SD card; if you have to manually select the location do so with extreme care because the target drive can be overwritten.
Then boot from SD; hold ‘Escape’ during the startup screen and select ‘USB 2.0 Card Reader SD0’ from the menu.
Once you’re up and running follow the installation process, this may take a while but there are no special setting you must configure. Once the install is complete, your machine should be running Ubuntu with no problems.

The New HP Pavilion DV2800 Artist Edition is one of the first notebooks to leave the world of mono-color laptops design for a detailed ‘colorful’ appearance. The inside workings of this powerful laptop are housed in a smoothly designed case which comes complete with a modern, sleek design which gives this series the ‘Artist Edition’ label.
HP Custom Design Laptop

Evidently the Artist Edition is not just geared towards the graphically enlightened, it comes packed with the features and specifications fit for any budding media enthusiast. When it comes to getting creative, the DV2800 can handle pretty much anything you can throw at it, expect smooth graphics, low latency sound editing and recording abilities and excellent gaming experiences.
The HP Pavilion DV2800 has quickly gained popularity amongst many laptop users. Being reasonably priced, boasting a powerful spec and coming complete with a contemporary artistic design has got this great all round performer selling like hot cakes. The DV2800 has been getting a lot of air time too, not only in adverts from HP and in the numerous retailers that wish to push their stock, but also from various TV presenters and show hosts who are chosen to use the DV2800 while being filmed.
At the heart of this machine is an Intel Core Duo T5550 1.83GHz - 667MHz with 2MB of L2 Cache. 3GB of DDR2 SDRAM keeps everything running smoothly and the 250 GB hard drive gives you plenty of room to store your data. The powerful nVidia GeForce graphics card ensures high quality video and gaming graphics and a couple of cool little features like the Kingston MicroSaver Lock, remote control, built in microphone and camera come as a pleasant added bonus.
Just because the rest of world have decided something is a worthy investment doesn’t necessarily mean you will, so take a look through the tech specs and decide for yourself, however we’re sure you’ll agree, the HP Pavilion DV2800 is a refreshing powerful alternative to a lifeless colorless notebook.

The First Million Dollar Laptop From Luvaglio

The first million dollar laptop to hit the stores is rumored to be on its way, and could be in the form of this luxury notebook by a UK company called Luvaglio.
The Luxury good manufacturer Luvaglio announced last year that they had been working on developing a high-end luxury laptop, Luvaglio CEO Rohan Sinclair Luvaglio told reporter earlier last year:
“Unlike many of the highly priced products being released, we took our time to develop something out of the ordinary with real attention to detail. “
“I didn’t want us to simply re-house a laptop into a diamond studded casing, or diamond encrust the entire thing simply to make it expensive. We’ve put thought in from the keyboard down to the power charger. There is an integrated screen cleaning device and a very rare colored diamond piece of jewelry that doubles up as the power button when placed into the laptop and also acts as security identification. We have used diamonds elsewhere but have given them purpose.”
With Luvaglio being as exclusive as a luxury brand could be (their website is by invitation only), the information floating around regard their million dollar laptop is rather scarce.
There had been an internet video released which showed the larger design (perhaps the case?) sliding open at both the sides, but this was quickly removed….
What we do know about the laptop is that it incorporates a 17″ widescreen LED screen with a specially designed anti-reflective glare coating for a clear and brighter image, a 128GB Solid State Hard Disk, a slot loading Blue-Ray drive, an integrated screen cleaning device and a very rare colored diamond piece of jewelry that doubles up as the power button when placed into the laptop, the jewel also acts as security identification.
According to Luvaglio, “the brand is committed to re-defining luxury in a few sectors, technology being one of them.
“Many claim to produce luxury goods but we believe that the true element of luxury is having something that says “YOU” that money can’t buy.
“At present and from our previous luxury work, our initial clients will be chosen from this selection as we have already established trust.
“The range to be released shortly would allow the owner to become the creator and visit our showroom at two or three well known upmarket stores we are in discussion with, whereby our selection of materials, finishes and accessories will be available to view and a choice selected.
“The choice will be based on our selection but of course other colors and finishes can be done on request. We have access to diamonds that are simply rare and near impossible to get hold of, so are able to offer a very embodied choice.
“The presentation boxes are of course supplied and finished in the choice that is selected by the client. Exact figures I am unable to provide at present due to negotiations but will certainly be more obtainable then our master piece.”

Check out these great Sony Vaio concept designs that have been popping up on the net, they are certainly a step a head of the iMac concept designs we featured in January’s posts (click here to read iMac Concept Designs).

Although not official, these new Sony Vaio concept designs are really worth a mention. They feature a holographic glass screen that can go transparent and a keyboard that turns opaque when turned off.

Some of technology featured here is a way from being mastered to really perform well but the designs are certainly an interesting peek of things to come. Perhaps Sony will think about taking these ideas on board for their future range of Vaio laptops.

The highly anticipated MacBook Air hit finally stores earlier this year and for most Mac fans, it really does live up to expectations.

With all the press the MacBook Air is getting, it wasn’t going to be long before we at 800HighTech managed to make these available on finance for all Military Service Members and Civilian DoD’s regardless of past debt or bad credit history.

MacBook Air Now Available On Finance From 800HighTech
So why all the hype? For starters the MacBook Air has managed to cram a powerful 1.6GHz (or optional 1.8GHz) Intel Core 2 Duo processor, an 80GB hard disk (or optional 64GB solid-state drive) and Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor into an extremely slim line casing measuring just 0.16 to 0.76 inches, whilst at the same time, still offering the comfort of a full sized backlit keyboard as well as a large 13.3 inch screen.
A couple of things you will immediately notice about the slim design is the absence of an optical disk drive and the reduction of video and audio in’s and out’s. As standard the MacBook Air only comes with a DVI output (which can also support VGA by the use of an included adaptor), one USB port and an audio out. This may seem like a drastic measure to save space but Apple have done their best to compensate for this by incorporating remote disk technology (keep reading for more information about MacBook Air’s remote disk technology works).
Asus 9 inch Eee Pc Laptop

Asus are all set to release the big brother of the popular 7 inch Eee PC. The new larger model referred to as the Eee PC 900 (not confirmed) will boast a slightly higher spec as well as some great new features.

The Eee PC was a big hit for Asus, being voted the “The Most Wanted Christmas Gift” by American Amazon.com and CNet, as well as winning a prestigious award at the International CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards for 2008, it was inevitable that Asus would develop a bigger more powerful machine.Recently unveiled at CeBIT 2008 the new Eee PC 900 seems to have kept the same basic concept as its smaller counterpart, adding a slight specification upgrade and just enough new features to keep you happy.
ASUS promises the screen will display a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution and specs will be upgraded to 1G of memory, a larger storage of up to 12GB and wider 8.9-inch screen. There is also the addition of a “multi-finger gesture input” trackpad, which will provide the ability to zoom in and out as well as allowing for two-finger scrolling similar to the pad found on Macs.

The Eee PC will be compatible with both Linux and Windows although the Windows version is set to retail at nearly twice the price. Here we really notice the cost benefits of open source software. The Eee Pc is set to release in the summer, will retail for around 399 (Linux OS), making it reasonably priced depending on the choice of hard drive space.

Sony and Nichias Compact Blu Ray Player

As Blu-Ray seems to be leading the high definition format war over rival HD DVD, Sony and Nichia have teamed up to develop a new Blu-Ray player that is smaller and more cost efficient.

The new laser unit is just 3mm think and is compatible with normal DVD’s. Standard Blu-Ray players can not read DVD’s that contain organic dyes in the recording layers - Sony and Nichia’s new player can, this means the company will be able to save money churning out compatible disks from existing DVD lines and hopefully these savings will be passed on to the consumer.
The smaller dimension of the new Blu-ray laser makes the drive very efficient on space. This should also reduce cost of laptops and handheld devices that require time and money spent to map out how all the components will fit into case size deemed “portable.â€
There is little news as to which products will be incorporating the new Blu-Ray player however Sony did announce that the new disc drive should make an appearance in their Vaio laptop range later this year, there are also rumors of the PS3 possibly getting this upgrade.

The release of Google Docs and Spreadsheets, the highly anticipated free office suite application available through the internet by download, threatens to topple Microsoft’s dominant position as the leader in desktop software offering services delivered over the Web supported by advertising and/or subscriptions. So much so that Microsoft set to the drawing board and immediately began developing a rival project.
Tip: Be sure to check out the link at the end of this article for a link to a listing of various free and open source software programs for download that is having the executives at Microsoft shaking in their boots and thinking about ways to counter this!
The aim is to offer a free version of Microsoft Works which will be pre installed in desktops and will display advertisements stored in cache, the advertisements that help support the application will be refreshed when the computer establishes an internet connection.
Sandboxie Computer Protection

If you spend alot of your time using the internet for work or pleasure, you’ll know computer virus’s and spyware are at constant battle with your anti-virus software, even downloading tool bars or add-ons can be a pain to get rid of if you decide not to keep them. Enter Sandboxie, a great piece of free software that not only protects your systems drive but allows you to completely delete anything you have installed or added to you PC with a click of the mouse.
In computer security, a sandbox is a security mechanism for safely running programs, hence the name sandboxie, a sandbox provides a tightly-controlled set of resources for guest programs to run in, such as scratchspace on disk and memory. Sandboxie incorporates this technology by creating a sandbox as a temporary drive for all data transferal.
When you run a program on your computer, data flows from the hard disk to the program via read operations. The data is then processed and displayed, and finally flows back from the program to the hard disk via write operations. With Sandboxie running all data is intercepted in the sandbox, data then flows in both directions between the program and the sand box, leaving your permanent drive free from read and write operations.
Sandboxie intercepts all changes to both your files and registry settings, making it virtually impossible for any software to reach outside the sandbox. Even browser items are intercepted, so when you throw away the sandbox, all the history records and other side-effects of your browsing disappear as well.
This great piece of software is free so trying it out should not be a problem, however if you find it makes your Web experience that much safer, you are encouraged to register the program for a small fee.
