Google Medical Personal Health Records Online

For the last 18 months Google has been working to develop their personal health records solution. So far we haven’t been given much insight into what the product will be like, however there is promise that it will be comprehensive and user-friendly.

As of last month Google received a large endorsement from the Cleveland Clinic to help in the development of the technology.

Google Begins Testing Their New Personal Health Records Technology at Cleveland Clinic

The big medical center has now started a pilot project to begin linking the health information for some of its patients with Google’s personal health records.

Cleveland Clinic currently employs a sophisticated IT system to store their 100,000+ patient’s personal health records.

But a sizeable portion of those patients are retirees that may spend four or more months elsewhere, typically in Florida or Arizona. When these patients travel, their electronic health records don’t follow them explains Dr. C. Martin Harris, the clinic’s chief information officer.

“It forces the patient to become his or her own medical historian,

“Google personal health record is a solution to that problem”

Using Google’s technology, a person can approve the transfer of their medical records from the clinics computers to series of secure Web pages.

The pilot project is scheduled to last six to eight weeks, and will involve approx 10,000 patients.

Marissa Mayer, a vice president, who took over management of the health team six months ago said, “The project with Cleveland Clinic is “a milestone” for Google”.

Google’s personal health records is still in development, and it will be introduced publicly and made widely available, after the pilot project is concluded, Ms. Mayer said.

With Cleveland Clinic being at the forefront of health information technology, the recent endorsement is more promise that Google’s Personal Health Records will provide a one-stop solution for all health records.

Although we may not know much until the release of the product, what we do know is that Google will offer a fresh new user-interface as well as automated data links, so the patient does not have to type in personal data, as is required with some personal health records.

The recent endorsement from the Cleveland Clinic has also prompted other medical centers to sign up.

“This is truly a patient-controlled health record, and that’s a very significant step in the drive toward a more consumer-oriented system of health care,” said Dr. John D. Halamka, chief information officer of the Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Halamka is also chief information officer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, which plans to link its electronic patient records with Google personal health pages.

I’m sure that most of you stationed overseas will have noticed the different techniques other countries have for counting their money. We are not sure about the origin of these differing techniques but we did find a great little video that runs you through each one. They all seem rather practical - some slightly more than others - with the exception of the technique used in Turkmenistan, Kazakistan, Pakistan and some parts of Turkey, what exactly is going on there?

I am sure everyone has heard about it, but what exactly does it meant to have your identity stolen and how much of a threat is it actually.

What is Identity Theft

Newsweek Identity Theft ArticleIdentity theft is a catch-all term for crimes involving illegal usage of another individual’s identity. The most common form of identity theft is credit card fraud. While the term is relatively new, the practice of stealing money or getting other benefits by pretending to be a different person is thousands of years old.

According to the non-profit Identity Theft Resource Center, identity theft is sub-divided into four categories:

* Financial Identity Theft (using another’s identity to obtain goods and services)
* Criminal Identity Theft (posing as another when apprehended for a crime)
* Identity Cloning (using another’s information to assume his or her identity in daily life)
* Business/Commercial Identity Theft (using another’s business name to obtain credit)

Identity theft may be used to facilitate crimes including illegal immigration, terrorism and espionage. Identity theft may also be a means of blackmail. There are also cases of identity cloning to attack payment systems, including medical insurance.

How Much of a Threat is Identity Theft to Me?

Surveys in the USA from 2003 to 2006 showed a decrease in the total number of victims but an increase in the total value of identity fraud to US$56.6 billion in 2006. The average fraud per person rose from $5,249 in 2003 to $6,383 in 2006.

Defense Link Article About Military Member Identity Theft Battle

The 2003 survey from the Identity Theft Resource Center found that :

* Only 15% of victims find out about the theft through proactive action taken by a business
* The average time spent by victims resolving the problem is about 40 hours
* 73% of respondents indicated the crime involved the thief acquiring a credit card
* The emotional impact is similar to that of victims of violent crimes

After our Email fiasco by Jerry Hart Creative Marketing Email Scam, we sent out our first internal newsletter. We focused it on delivering helpful and entertaining articles that made it big on our blog or on other websites that our Military customers may appreciate. Most of our customers do not realize we have a blog and was a double plus.

I will include a link on the home page to our newsletter archives that will catalog our Newsletter, not including Jerry Hart terrible Email. This will allow you to keep track of our Emails, submit your thoughts, and refer to links or articles later on. I think this will also be helpful for users who may accidentally delete or may not receive the newsletter due to spam filters.

Email boxes are constantly attacked and quickly filled from spam, so if you decide that you do not want one more newsletter added to your Email inbox, you can access it via the website. You can unsubscribe at anytime via a newsletter or from your 800HighTech customer account or when you register. We will announce all new Emails Newsletters here on the blog and post a link to it (See Below for this month’s newsletter link).

I have titled our new newsletter “HighTech Edge”. I was considering keeping it a consistent layout, so it would be easier to find the information you want but in the end decided against it. I will not feature ads, promotions, or products in the Email unless we are running a really hot deal. It is not our intent to use the newsletter to push our sales, but to increase our communication with our customers and give them the edge over other geeks on IT information that is actually useful!

We have a high ratio customers return and we have spent years improving our customer image. We depend on you all to help us improve, and keep us above the competition.

I really like this creative ad, but I am not sure about the placement. Probably where we would focus the most attention on mirror, but it seems like the bathroom does not have th most color. Outside would have been better, but I am not sure how many people would have noticed it.

We are in the process of adding a range of printers to our stock, we already have 4 available on finance and we will be adding a few more in the near future. If you would like to see any specialist printers for either business or personal use, please feel free to leave any comments with your suggestions and we’ll try our best to make them available for you. To help explain which printer may be best for your needs, we thought we would have a closer look at the different types of printers on the market.

An Overview of Printer Types

Monochrome Laser

Monochrome Laser PrinterGenerally, if you print a lot of text, such as letters and other business documents, a laser printer is likely your best bet. They are fast, produce good-looking documents at only a few cents per page and have more networking options.

Monochrome Laser Printers are often a lot faster than inkjets and corporate machines can print text at nearly twice the speed of home models. When printing text, laser printer speeds ranged from 12 to 30 pages per minute. This is good news for a busy office or anyone who demands high volumes of print.

The amount of paper the model can hold also plays part to how fast and efficient your printer can run. Monochrome lasers hold from 150 to 900 sheets, with corporate models frequently holding around 500 sheets as standard. Expansion trays can also be added, holding up to as many as 5000 sheets for certain models.

Most high-end lasers include at least 64MB of RAM. Many models now come with expansion options permitting a few hundred megabytes of memory, important for queuing multiple print jobs at once. A medium sized office should equip themselves with at least 64MB – 128MB. Possible other specifications to consider are the network capabilities and remote management options, laser printers tend to have more options in this field than a standard inkjet printer.

Monochrome Laser TonerThe ongoing cost of running the printer is also a factor, laser toner cartridges are much cheaper than inkjet cartridges and the overall cost should work out to be just a few cents per page. The initial price of laser printers has also dropped dramatically over past few years making them affordable for the home user too, but despite saving money on ink and cost per page, the initial outlay will still be considerably more than inkjet printers.

Color Laser

Color Laser PrinterIf you would like to print in color and still demand the large volumes of print like an office or small business, then you should consider buying a color laser printer.

Ideal for office documents containing color charts and other graphics, color laser printers often produce black-and-white pages at a cost per page similar to monochrome lasers. Print speeds when printing black and white text are also similar to monochrome lasers at around 12 to 30 pages per minute, however when printing graphics in color, expect to get speeds of around 5 to 20 pages per minute depending on the model.

Most color lasers produce photos that are adequate for many uses, such as real-estate brochures, car insurance claims, or advertising fliers. Many models now support glossy paper that helps prints look more like real photos. However, they still lack the color accuracy and print resolution to rival inkjet printers.

Like the monochrome laser the intial cost of a color laser machine is considerably more than an inkjet. The color laser toner cartridges are also more expensive than the monochrome cartridges but the overall cost for printing in color still works out to just few cents per page.

Inkjet

Inkjet PrinterInkjet printers offer a good compromise between quality and speed. Text quality isn’t the highest but they can produce extremely good quality photos and vendors are increasingly adding new features such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to increase connectivity options. PictBridge, a dedicated UBS port for transfering images from a digital camera, is already a popular feature on most photo orientated inkjets.

Makers of business orientated inkjets offer a host of extra features such as higher capacities, optional paper trays, ethernet network connectivity, and more memory. Inkjet printers are quite a bit slower than laser printers, you can expect around 1-5 pages per minute depending on the content of the document.

Inkjet CartridgeInkjets are the cheapest printers to buy, but if you print a lot, the cost of replacement ink cartridges will certainly catch up on you in short time. Most cartridges only hold enough ink for 300-1000 prints, the cheaper the cartridge the less ink it will have so even buying economy priced replacements usually doesn’t save any money in the long run. It’s the price and capacity of ink jet consumables that will determine the lifetime cost of an inkjet printer.

Multi Functional

Multi Functional PrinterAn MFP combines print, copy, scan, and sometimes fax functions in an often large all-in-one unit. These are especially attractive for personal use, home-based business or even an executive office. MFP’s can come in either inkjet or laser form and can be geared for office or personal use.

Office-oriented models have an automatic document feeder for scanning multiple pages as a single task, and they often have a built-in fax machine and Ethernet or Wi-Fi networking.

Photo-oriented models sometimes let you scan slides and negatives, and they usually have built-in media slots for reading from digital camera memory cards. Both office and photo-oriented models come in inkjet or laser formats so the choice is highly dependent on your needs. A laser MFP would be ideal for a fast moving office environment whilst an inkjet printer would do well serving a smaller operation concerned about print quality.

Snapshot

A more specialist type of printer is the Snapshot printer. They print extremely high quality 4×6 inch photo images and connect easily to your computer of digital camera, and because of the specific size of photos, these printers are compact and portable.

Using either dye-sublimation or inkjet print technologies, snapshot printers are able to print almost photo quality images. Models with four or more colors of ink generally produce the best quality and models with several shades of black and grey ink will print high quality black and white photos.

Being designed for a specialist market, snapshot printers are generally more expensive than inkjets designed for personal use. Never-the-less models designed for the home user are very affordable and produce high quality prints.

General Patton Decision MakingWell for openers we are not implying General Patton would advise you to buy a computer from 800HighTech. When he was planning battles they didn’t even have computers. BUT I am quite sure what he would advise to assure you make a wise decision on anything would be gather all the good intelligence available and verify that it is accurate. Then taking all the important factors into consideration and weighing the importance of each, make a decision and act on your decision! In battle as in life sometimes timing is everything.

Many great men in history when faced with a decision would take an ordinary piece of paper and draw a line top to bottom. On one side of the line they would write the reasons for a certain decision and on the other the reasons against. They would look at the pluses & minuses, weigh the facts, make a decision and then they would act! I suggest you do the same on this and when faced with any big decision. It may help you to crystallize your thinking, I know it helps me.
