The Pain Ray or Active Denial System (ADS) is a long standing joint project between the Air Force and the Pentagons Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate. The ABS non-lethal weapon consists of a real life ray gun which shoots 95 GHz millimeter waves that penetrate the skin at a 64th of an inch beneath the skin. This causes the water molecules to boil where the nerve receptors are most concentrated and of course, this hurts like hell.

“[They produce an] intense heating sensation [which] stops only if the individual moves out of the beam’s path or the beam is turned off……..
“The sensation caused by the system has been described by test subjects as feeling like touching a hot frying pan.”

Military grade units – designed to zap the masses from afar - have been developed by the Air Force and Homeland Security Company Raytheon, and Sandia researchers are responsible of developing smaller units mainly designed to dissuade nearby individuals from sneaking into classified facilities. For its practicality the Pain Ray has been hailed by many as “the Holy Grail of crowd control.†Theodore Barn, an assistant deputy undersecretary of defense for advanced systems and concepts said, “We expect the [Military] services to add it to their tool kit. And that could happen as early as 2010.”
But despite all the recent hype regarding the Pain Ray the military still can’t shake fears about the ADS. Although tests have shown the beam carries no lasting side effects, people are still worried that the Pain Ray will “give them cancer, melt their eyeballs or make them sterile.â€

I, like many Americans will find it outrageous that this system has not been deploy long ago in Iraq.
It is public knowledge that top level commanders in the field have repeatedly requested that ADS be sent to protect our brave troops. Yet the disease of political correction has our stateside decision-makers choked with caution.
Northrup can say the same thing about MTHEL or Skyguard. Despite the disappointing results of the latest test this laser system has proven itself capable of downing mortar and artillery shells in flight.
As of the last 48 hours three more American service men have been killed in the Green Zone from mortars launched from hidden locations. Once mortars are launched there is no current defense except to take cover, usually after the first salvo. Even the prototype MTHEL would at least give them a better chance of intercepting mortar shells than simply doing nothing.
How many more of our brave men and women have to die before the Pentagon and their superiors do the right thing and ship these weapons ASAP to Iraq?
