Marine Corps 232nd Birthday

As a son of 2 Marines and who is still an active participant in the military community, I get to witness first hand the hard work, dedication, and honor that each one of these Marines exhibits day-in and day-out. Even when they are off duty they are still a Marine. Sacrifice of all types is made by each one and their families, with the majority of these tales going unnoticed and unrewarded.

The Few - The Proud - The Marines

Globe and Anchor Flags for Marine CorpsThe United States Marine Corps traces its institutional roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War, formed at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, by a resolution of the Continental Congress on November 10, 1775, a date regarded and celebrated as the birthday of the Marine Corps. At the end of the American Revolution in 1783, both the Continental Navy and Continental Marines were disbanded, and although individual Marines were enlisted for the few American naval vessels left, the institution itself would not be resurrected until 1798. In preparation for the Naval War with France, Congress created the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The U.S. Marines’ most famous action of this period occurred during the First Barbary War (1801 - 1805), when William Eaton and First Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon led seven Marines and 300 Arab and European mercenaries in an effort to capture Tripoli. Though they only reached Derna, the action at Tripoli has been immortalized in the Marines’ hymn and the Mameluke Sword carried by Marine officers.

General Lejeune Marine Corps Birthday SpeechOn 1 November 1921, General Lejune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921. The order summarized the history, mission, and tradition of the Marine Corps, and directed that it be read to every command on 10 November each subsequent year in honor of the birthday of the Marine Corps. This order has been duly carried out and always been a wonderful opportunity to attend.

The celebrations were formalized by Commandant Lemuel C. Shepherd in 1952, outlining the cake ceremony, which would enter the Marine Drill Manual in 1956. By tradition, the first slice of cake is given to the oldest Marine present, and the second to the youngest Marine present.

British Military Invisible Tank

M1A2 Invisible Army Tank

British defense researchers have invented a means to cloak tanks and make them invisible tank. London’s Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and Sun all report on tests conducted by the Ministry of Defence last week in which a tank rolled across a field, completely invisible to observers standing at a certain point.

“This technology is incredible,” an unnamed soldier was quoted by the Daily Mail and Sun. “If I hadn’t been present I wouldn’t have believed it. I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun.”

Invisible Cloaking of a TankAlthough as you first heard this topic, it is not as mystical as it might seem. The technology relies on heavy use of camera and projectors. Basically, a camera films the background, which is then projected upon a special surface applied to something in the foreground in this case, a tank.

You can see the similar technology in the following video that has gained a lot of popularity on the internet

Sir John Pendry of Imperial College London, one of the world’s leading experts on surface reflectivity and lead author of a widely reported paper last year that said:

“Cloak of invisibility is theoretically possible. The drawback at the moment is the dependence upon cameras and projectors,” the Sun quoted Pendry, who did not confirm an implied connection with the defense project. “The next stage is to make the tank invisible without them which is intricate and complicated, but possible.”

Ever since I was a little kid, I knew this type of technology would eventually surface if it hadn’t already. Below in the video by General Dynamics you can see Trophy Active Defense System in action. It offers an invisible force field for military vehicles that disables incoming RPG rounds.

The system can simultaneously engage several threats, arriving from different directions, is effective on stationary or moving platforms, and is effective against short and long range threats (such as RPGs and ATGM). Trophy was designed to be effective in open or closed terrain, including urban area and can be operated under all weather conditions

BumpTop Enhanced Desktop Interface

The digital age is here and has been for some time now. The computer interface we have come to know has become boring and in my opinion out-dated. It no longer gives a sense of high tech or advanced. It is a 2-D mundane layout that has me missing the days of old when my desk was in a chaotic and cryptic mess that only I understood. Well, programmers feel the same and they are taking this boring interface to the next level!

This is a great idea and a fun interface. Some problems with it however is you do not see the file names that distinguish file types from one another and you are not able to see a thumbnail preview of a picture or document like in new Windows environment. I am sure these bugs can be worked out and the program will be much better once it gets to the serious stage.

If you remember the Photosync Technology and Microsoft Surface environment, this interface is quickly adapting and evolving. I am ready for the change now - hopefully it becomes mainstream soon.

How Stuff Works Video Montage

Sorry, YouTube and How Stuff Works said it was evil to have their video available to the general public and the videos were taking down. So you are left with the following video:

I like YouTube and I like How Stuff Works - but man - they are so big now and have become overcome with legalese and rules. Another thing ruined, but you can not stop progression. Napster - LimeWire - Bit Torrents - YouTube - Google - Linux have all contributed and spawned out in so many directions that I do not understand why they even attempt to stop it. I think it looks bad on them. Instead they should focus on being dynamic and adjusting to the flow.

Time will tell ….

Aisan Girls Corographed Hand Dance

I few years back I caught a great show of the Chinese Dance Troupe making their rounds through Asia. The show was amazing and very trippy. As a military brat I was lucky to be exposed to many cultural sites and sounds. Many other brats like me and military members do not venture outside the tourist trails let alone the gates of the base. I stumbled on to it and was surprised to see a video existed of it. Actually, Google knows all and sees all, so I should not have been that surprised. Anyways I dedicated this one to all the barrack rats out there:

Here is their background which you will find equally interesting. I am sure the world will be stunned again with the 2008 Olympics right around the corner:

There is an excellent dance, called the Thousand-Hand Guanyin. Considering the tight coordination required, their accomplishment is nothing short of amazing, even if they were not all deaf. Yes, you read correctly. All 21 of the dancers are complete deaf-mutes. Relying only on signals from trainers at the four corners of the stage, these extraordinary dancers deliver a visual spectacle that is at once intricate and stirring. Its first major international debut was in Athens at the closing ceremonies for the 2004 Paralympics.

It had long been in the repertoire of the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe and had traveled to more than 40 countries.

Its lead dancer is 29-year-old Tai Lihua, who has a BA from The Hubei Fine Arts Institute. The video was recorded in Beijing during the Spring Festival celebrations this year.

Range, speed and flexibility. Hard rules once defined by the limitations of previous medium-lift helicopters. The V-22 is the world’s first production tilt-rotor combines the vertical performance of a helicopter with the high speed and range of a fixed wing aircraft which offers twice the speed, three times the payload, five times the range, and can fly more than twice as high as older rotor craft it is destined to replace. The Osprey is about to revolutionize military air transport in a way that has not been seen since the introduction of helicopters more than 50 years ago.

V-22 Osprey

V-22 Aerial RefuelThe Osprey is a tilt rotor vertical/short take off and landing (VSTOL) multi-mission aircraft with capabilities like no other. Combining the vertical flight capabilities of a helicopter with the speed and range of a turbo prop airplane it permits air to aerial refueling and worldwide self deployment.

Helio Display Interactive Mid Air Display

IO2 Technology Heliodisplay LogoOver the last fours years IO2 Technology have been developing the Heliodisplay. Originally shown as a prototype back in 2003, the Heliodisplay third generation (M3) model is now on the market. Like a computer monitor or television, this mid air display can project any video signal coming from most sources with one main difference, there is no screen.

Check out the video to get more of an idea >>

IO2 Technology Heliodisplay Projecting ImageA projector is focused onto a layer of mist in mid-air, resulting in a two-dimensional display that appears to float. This is similar in principle to the cinematic technique of rear projection but with no screen to display the image, the Heliodisplay produces an effect much like a hologram.

IO2 Helidisplay Projecting ImageImages are visible under typical indoor lighting and are about as bright as the first-generation rear projection TV’s. The display works best under controlled lighting such as in museums, movie theaters, and most office spaces, although it is not recommended for outside use IO2 does build outdoor systems for enterprise solutions.

IO2 Technology HeliodisplayThe Heliodisplay’s default resolution is 800 x 600 but supports up to 1280 x 1024, depending on the model, a 22 to 42 inch image can be projected floating above the device, this can be viewed from 150 degree viewing angle in front of the projector or from both front and rear, again depending on the model.

IO2 Technology HeliodisplayAnother amazing feature of the Heliodisplay is the ability to be used as a touch-screen monitor to navigate and interact with content. When connected to a PC using a standard USB cable and the software provided you can use your finger, pen, pencil or any object to select and navigate as you would a conventional touch-screen, the only difference is that there is no physical screen.

Great video clip, from the cockpit of a U.S. Military Jet turbo-prop, of a fighter pilots naval aviator’s view when landing on a runway flight deck of a military nuclear powered aircraft carrier during a military exercise in the middle of the ocean.

Can anyone give us any information on the type of Jet this pilot is flying or which carrier they are landing on?
