Bill Gates will manage one of the highest-profile transitions in American business history and computer technology. Before stepping down as chairman of Microsoft (currently $300 billion company that he co-founded over 30 years ago) and moving on to philanthropy, Gates will head a few more high-tech projects and hopefully achieve his goal of bridging the physical and virtual worlds. A secret covert project code named Milan and is 5 years in the making was top secret until recently being unveiled to the public at the Wall Street Journal conference. The project involved transforming an ordinary tabletop into a brilliant, interactive surface with effortless interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch, and physical objects. A revolutionary aspect of Microsoft Surface is its natural interaction with everyday objects and technologies with an intuitive touch-sensitive 30-inch tabletop with nothing but your fingers. No more computer mouse, keyboards, or wires. The multi-touch interface allows the user to have hands-on control of photos, music, maps, and more. The coolest feature I liked was the photo resizing and stacking that is similar to Macintosh’s Apple iPhone’s zoom gestures.

This idea is nothing new and is not the only company eyeing the new market, but it has never been more than a prototype until recently being exhibited at the All Things Digital conference.. Microsoft Surface made several appearances in movies like the futuristic movies Minority Report and The Island. This new technology, the brainchild of Stevie Bathiche and Andy Wilson, is breaking down the traditional barriers of people and technology by providing an effortless interaction with digital media. It is apart of Intel’s vision of the near future where devices work seamlessly together. This innovative computer has price tags running $10,000 a unit. Microsoft however expects prices to plummet over the next three to five years to the point that it will be available for every home.

Deciding on computer memory for most of us doesn’t mean much. For those who do understand, they know that selecting the right computer memory can mean a world of difference in performance of your computer. It’s been said that you can never have enough money, and the same holds true for RAM, especially if you do a lot of graphics-intensive work or gaming. Next to the CPU itself, RAM is the most important factor in computer performance. If you don’t have enough, adding RAM can make more of a difference than getting a new CPU!

RAM is the best known form of computer memory. RAM is considered “random access” because you can access any memory cell directly if you know the row and column that intersect at that cell. When you think about it, it’s amazing how many different types of electronic memory you encounter in daily life. Many of them have become an integral part of our vocabulary: RAM, ROM, Cache, Dynamic RAM, Static RAM, Flash memory, Memory Sticks, Virtual memory, Video memory, and BIOS.

If your system responds slowly or accesses the hard drive constantly, then you need to add more RAM. If you are running Windows XP, Microsoft recommends 128MB as the minimum RAM requirement. At 64MB, you may experience frequent application problems. For optimal performance with standard desktop applications, 256MB is recommended. If you are running Windows 95/98, you need a bare minimum of 32 MB, and your computer will work much better with 64 MB. Windows NT/2000 needs at least 64 MB, and it will take everything you can throw at it, so you’ll probably want 128 MB or more.

We will discuss the benefits of memory and how to decide how much memory your custom computer or custom laptop should have. You can always upgrade later, but it is best to get the right memory first.

The “Cobra Gold” live-fire military exercises, the largest US war games in Asia, are set for May 8 to 18 in eastern Thailand with a focus on multinational peacekeeping operations. The war games were launched 26 years ago and originally limited to US and Thai troops. This year, 3,090 personnel from Thailand would take part along with 2,000 US forces. Japan will send 47 troops, with 70 from Singapore and 27 from Indonesia. Forces from those three nations will only participate in computer simulations and observe humanitarian projects. In earlier years, some 20,000 personnel participated in the war games, but the scale has gone down considerably in recent years as a result of US Military action in Iraq and Afghanistan. This year’s event will be mainly sponsored by the United States and Thailand, with the former contributing 6 million U.S. dollars while the latter 20 million Thai Baht (about 590,000 dollars).

Fresh-in, Apples renowned laptop notebooks are now available for financing for the U.S. Military and Civilian DoD employees. Not many, like myself are avid Mac users, but have been debating whether or not to make the leap to the Mac World. Macintosh is by far a much more graphic based and cool interface system, but compatibility, limited parts, and often higher prices has discouraged a lot of users to start the learning process. However, the new MacBooks and MacBooks Pro just may be the product that makes you switch.

Lets start of with the newest laptops by Apple, the MacBook Pros. Available in 2 sizes, 15 inch and 17 inch and two different Core 2 Duo Processors, the 2.16Ghz or 2.33Ghz. This makes it almost 40% faster that the predecessor MacBook. If speed is what you need, don’t look at the write up listed below. Never mind, read it cause I spent time writing it up. The new processor, the Intel Core Duo, makes this the first dual-processor laptop Apple has ever made. The MacBook Pro’s system bus runs at 667MHz, four times the speed of the PowerBook’s 167MHz bus. The RAM is dramatically faster. The MacBook Pro adds more convenience by including the Front Row Apple Remote control. This makes it ideal for presentation, music, movies, and laying around surfing. Another great feature that I personally look for in every laptop now is a built in web camera, and of course MacBook Pro has one. I hate dealing with cables and packing up of extra peripheral devices. The more built in features the better for those who actually want a laptop to be mobile. The iSight, the built in webcam name for those who are not yet familiar with Apple, sets you up for easy video conferencing and video chatting with love ones or possible love ones on those long deployments.
